Acupuncture has gained popularity as a complementary therapy for pain management, supported by numerous evidence-based studies. It is safe and hardly causes any side effects. While it is widely recognised for its effectiveness in treating pain, acupuncture is also used for a range of other conditions, from cold and flu symptoms to mental stress.
How does acupuncture work?
People are often curious about how acupuncture works, and it can be quite hard to understand how inserting a needle into specific points on the body can produce therapeutic effects? Our body contains 12 primary meridian channels and 8 extra-ordinary channels that traverse its entirety. Acupuncture points are locations where Qi and Blood (energy and materials) are most abundant. To visualise, think of train rails and stations: there is typically more activity near the stations. When a needle is inserted into an acupuncture point, it sends signals along the meridian channels, influencing the targeted area or relieving any blockages along the route.
How are acupuncture points prescribed?
The first thing we learned in becoming an acupuncturist is the pathways of the meridian channels and the locations of the acupoints—much like a train driver must be familiar with their route! TCM views the body as an interconnected whole, so we also conduct a thorough consultation to arrive at a TCM diagnosis (a detailed process in itself) before selecting the treatment points. Depending on the condition, we not only address the primary complaint but also focus on the channels affected by the ailment.
